KW Little Library Goes Virtual
A good book can provide quiet solitude. It can also bring a community together during challenging times.
The recent provincial COVID-19 emergency order resulted in the temporary closure of local libraries, book stores and thrift shops. Book lovers were yearning for new ways to get their hands on a good book to pass the time during these unprecedented times. The need to access books inspired the grassroots online book-share initiative, KW Online Little Library, launched by Kitchener resident Jennifer Laurie.
“The pandemic has shown us how much we need to be connected to other people,” said Laurie, “Sharing a book can be a really personal thing. There is something exciting about sharing a book that you loved or that impacted you, knowing or hoping the next person finds it just as wonderful.”
How does it work? People submit the book titles they have available and are willing to part with through a Google form that feeds a shared online library of books. Anyone looking for a book can search the library offerings, contact the person directly and arrange to complete the transaction (porch pick up, drop off). There is no expectation to return the book to original owner. There is no cost to participate.
While the pandemic provided the inspiration, Laurie believes interest in the online library will remain for many years. “I think people are looking for simpler ways of being, by sharing what they can. And, as our communities become more densely populated and more people live in condos or apartments, the opportunity to host a traditional little library isn’t always possible. People love little libraries! For many, they symbolize the essence of community – offering something with no expectation of something in return.”
Kitchener’s traditional Little Libraries have become popular places for book lovers with over 30 little libraries conveniently located across the city in parks and on private property. The Kitchener Public Library’s virtual at home resources and Curbside Pick Up are also good options during these times of isolation and physical distancing.
The KW Online Little Library is looking to develop an improved sharing platform in the near future. If interested in helping, please contact Jennifer at kwonlinelittlelibrary@gmail.com or follow along on Twitter and Instagram.
