Join in on the placemaking festivities taking place this weekend across Kitchener
The 2019 Placemaking Challenge Weekend is just around the corner! This year, from Thursday, September 26 to Sunday, September 29, there’s a number of fun resident-led activities and events to check out across Kitchener, including:
From Thursday, September 26 to Sunday, September 29, Gaukel Street in downtown Kitchener will be transformed into a fun, people-focused space. Relax with friends at the patio tables, enjoy live music and theatre, or shoot hoops at the basketball net. The long-term vision of the Gaukel Greenway project team is to turn the street into a car-free urban park, connecting Victoria Park with Kitchener City Hall. You can let them know what you want to see on Gaukel Street by filling out this survey.

Heritage Learning Garden Official Launch
The students of Grand River Collegiate Institute group received a Placemaking Grant for public seating to enhance their outdoor space. To celebrate, they’re hosting a community paint to brighten up one of their picnic tables. They will be serving snacks made by the hospitality class using tomatoes and herbs that they have grown in this community garden.
When: Friday, September 27 at 11 AM – 12 PM

Rockway Raised Bed Herb Garden
The Rockway Raised Bed Herb Garden Committee are celebrating their project with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The event will start with speeches at the raised beds followed by a ribbon cutting at 10 AM. The ribbon cutting will be followed by a celebration on the Rockway patio with a performance by the “Rockway Amigos Travel Band”. Coffee and treats will be available, and there will also be some herb themed giveaways for people to take home with them!
When: Friday, September 27, 2019 at 10 AM – 11:30 AM
Where: Rockway Pottery Shed and Garden located at 1405 King Street East
Take a stroll through McLennan Park accompanied by stories of local performance artists and take part in different stations along the way to receive fun lessons on various flow arts skills!
When: Saturday, September 28, 2019 (rain date of Sunday, September 29, 2019) from 10:30 AM – 7:30 PM.
Where: McLennan Park Gate located at 901 Ottawa Street South in Kitchener.
Creativity, Colour and Maker Culture at THEMUSEUM
Visit the THEMUSEUM for a number of hands-on activities presented by The Underground Studio MarkerSpace as part of Ontario Culture Days and the Placemaking Challenge Weekend! Using 3D Pens, guests can create their very own trinket to take home or program an Ozobots to play a song or run through a track. Plus, guest scan snap a photo of light-up art made from squishy circuits, create hidden messages with colour filters, and test their knowledge of tints, shades and hues!
When: Saturday, September 28th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Dancing in the Streets at Duke Street East
The King East Neighbourhood Association and Duke Street East Chalk & Chat community group will reveal their Duke Street East mural project with an outdoor celebrate complete with food and dance performances from the Contemporary School of Dance.
When: Saturday, September 28 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Where: Duke Street and Cameron Street Intersection in downtown Kitchener
Beautifying Our Entrance Signage – Bee Movie Screening
To celebrate their signage beautification project, which includes planting pollinator-friendly flowers, neighbours on the Huron Community Association Board of Directors are screening the Bee Movie at Jean Steckle Public School.
When: Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
