Anyone can garden at Trinity Village
Since 2000, Trinity Village has included gardening as part of their efforts to help people lead healthy and active lifestyles.
Their goal is to make the gardens accessible for all visitors and residents. They built raised beds that are about waist high to assist people using a wheelchair or those with limited mobility.
“I like gardening in the raised gardens, so I don’t need to bend over and hurt my back, " shares Michelle C., gardener at Trinity Village.
Hedi Lee, the horticultural manager at Trinity, says that the gardens offer residents a sense of purpose and belonging. She coordinates several groups of gardeners throughout the growing season.
They start with planting seedlings indoors in the early spring, which are then transplanted to the outdoor garden once the weather warms. The groups weed the gardens, tend the plants and harvest the produce.
Once the veggies are harvested, they turn the food into a meal. From their raised beds, they are able to prepare salads for groups of up to 90 people. They’ve also made zucchini loaves and other treats for their friends and neighbours. Yum!
The community garden is open to residents of Trinity Village, a non-profit retirement community that has facilities for independent living and long term care, as well as residents of the larger Kingsdale neighbourhood.
The gardens at Trinity Village are full of laughter, smiles and stories of friends past and present.
It’s never too early to start thinking about starting a new community garden. Find out how!
