Central Frederick is "Walking on Sunshine"
At the intersection of Chapel Street and Lancaster Street East, a sunny orange and yellow crosswalk adds a little colour to pedestrians and drivers passing by. The crosswalk was designed by resident Laura McBride to help reduce traffic speeds in the neighbourhood.
The whole neighbourhood was invited to come and watch the installation. They even played games and had face painting for the kids.
Painted crosswalks encourage drivers to be more aware and alert near pedestrian crossings. They also boost neighbourhood pride by getting residents involved in a community building activity.
Another simple but incredibly helpful change was contributed by Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church, located on the corner of Lancaster and Chapel streets. They added a couple extra slabs of sidewalk so there is room for kids on bikes and parents with strollers to wait until it’s safe to cross.
If you want to paint a crosswalk in your ‘hood, check out the Resident-led Traffic Calming Guide for ideas on how to get started.
