Belmont Village market brings fresh, local food to neighbourhood
The Belmont Market has been operating for the last three years. It runs on Tuesdays throughout the summer.
The goal, according to organizer George Broughton, is to do some good – by providing great local food and by donating the profits to local charities in the neighbourhood. All profits from the market currently support breakfast programs at nearby Westmount Public School.
Broughton sources the food locally - which he admits is a fair bit of work - but well worth it. The food comes direct from farmers and from other local outlets.
Local businesses have partnered with the market to bulk up its offerings. You can not only find local produce, but baked goods, breads, sauces and samosas supplied by neighbouring businesses.
George says that feedback has been great. There are lots of impromptu conversations and increased pedestrian traffic in the area. It’s also an accessible location for those in the neighbourhood that have trouble getting around.
The market is located on Belmont Ave. W. at Claremont Ave., near All Things Tea. Those arriving by foot or on bike via the Iron Horse Trail will find signs pointing them in the right direction.
