So many things to do at Mill Courtland Community Centre – inside and out
Mill-Courtland Community Center is a special and busy place. It is home to three neighbourhood associations - Highland-Stirling Community Group, Mill-Courtland Neighbourhood Association and the Cedar Hill Community Group - who all work together to provide preschool and after school programs, music and sports clubs, cooking classes and much, much more.
Outside the centre is just as impressive. There’s a summer farmers’ market, winter skating rink, public art installations, a cob oven and raised garden beds.
All these different amenities are a great example of the power of placemaking – creating a destination with multiple things for people to do. These different attractions bring out people of all ages, backgrounds and interests – people who might not interact with each other in their everyday lives.
The staff and volunteers at the centre are a group of passionate and dedicated individuals with a connection to their neighbourhood that runs deep.
They offer people a chance to participate and belong, and to be part of a neighbourhood. Jennifer Urosevic, co-chair of the Mill-Courtland Neighbourhood Association, shares that the center aims to be a safe place, no matter what is going on in someone’s life.
Nial, a volunteer, started coming to the centre in grade eight. The staff would open the gym for him to play basketball after school. Eventually he started running an after school basketball program. The program is still running years later and is wildly popular. Nial still comes back to volunteer and is inspiring a new generation of young people.
Each person adds their unique skills and abilities, shaping Mill Courtland Community Centre into a thriving hub of community building.
