Last month, the Dekay Street Party brought the neighborhood to life, showcasing the incredible spirit of community. With over 100 attendees, the event fostered pride and a strong sense of belonging among residents.  

One of the event’s most heartwarming aspects was the collaboration among the neighbors. Everyone came together, contributing food, decorations, and shared enthusiasm. Eight talented musical performers transformed the street into a lively concert venue. The abundance of delicious food ensured that no one went hungry, and smiles were everywhere. 

The street party served as a fantastic platform for neighbors to meet for the first time. As Tom Bethune, one of the lead planners for the street party, beautifully put it, "The Street Party is also an organic way for neighbors to meet each other." It’s remarkable how such events can break the ice. Tom shared a delightful story about Martha, who praised his sourdough bread from a previous fundraising event. They re-connected at the street party and their conversation blossomed into a budding friendship, demonstrating how community gatherings can forge lasting connections. 

The sense of community was palpable, even for more introverted people. Tom noted how his wife, typically more reserved, made new acquaintances at the party, connecting with other parents of children the same age as theirs. The event provided invaluable opportunities for families to share experiences and foster togetherness. 

The kids had a blast at the party! Laughter filled the air as over 50 children zoomed around on scooters, bikes, and skateboards. They enjoyed face painting and delicious hot dogs, highlighting the importance of community in their lives. As Tom remarked, "Community is so important for kids." 

If there’s one word to describe the Dekay Street Party, it would undoubtedly be "community." It created a family-like atmosphere where support and friendship flourished, nurturing an inclusive environment for everyone. 

Thanks to the LoveMyHood Matching Grant, the 2024 Dekay Street Party was a great example of neighbors uniting for a day filled with joy and fun!
