Community Garden is a Vibrant Learning Hub for Kids and Adults
Can kids help butterflies, grow food, and make new friends, all in one place? Yes they can!
A passionate group of residents at the Beyond Housing Community, off Bridgeport Road, transformed an underused green space into a vibrant learning hub for kids, gardeners and those who just like to visit. With support from the LoveMyHood program, City staff helped with planning and funding, but it was the residents who led the way!
Together, they built two beautiful gardens: an 8-plot Community Garden and a Pollinator Garden shaped like a Butterfly. These spaces were designed not just to beautify the neighbourhood, but to spark curiosity, connection, and learning, especially for kids.
Children played a big inspiration throughout the project. From planting seeds to watering and exploring pollinator-friendly plants, they will have a chance to learn hands-on about gardening, native plants, and the life cycle of butterflies, all right outside their homes.
The butterfly-shaped pollinator garden, filled with native flowers, will soon welcome butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, while helping calm traffic by drawing attention to the corner. Meanwhile, the Community Garden will support families with fresh produce and give neighbours the chance to share food, skills, and stories.
What truly stood out was how inclusive the project became. Newcomers, kids, parents, and seniors all found ways to get involved, whether digging, planting, or simply enjoying the space together.
This is just one of many Love My Hood projects designed with kids in mind from artwork and little free libraries to traffic calming and chalk art stations, children across Kitchener are helping inspire the places they live.
This project is more than just a garden. It’s a living classroom, a gathering space, and a source of pride. We hope it inspires more communities across Kitchener to grow something together — and give kids a place to learn and thrive.
