Community Kitchen Outreach: A way to connect with Singles and Seniors during quieter times
In the Chandler Mowat Neighbourhood, the Community Kitchen Outreach program brought together a group of dedicated residents who wanted to make a difference.
It all started in late 2021, when a few residents noticed how easy it was for seniors and singles in their community to feel disconnected, especially during those challenging times. They envisioned a program that would bring people together and give them a reason to visit the Chandler Mowat Community Centre at least once a month.
The idea was simple yet powerful: cook warm, nutritious meals and a tasty dessert for those who needed it most. They knew that something as small as a home-cooked meal could brighten someone's day and help them feel more connected to their community.
The group connected with the City's Neighbourhood Liaisons, who provided guidance and support, helping them bring their vision to life. Together, they planned each aspect of the program, ensuring that it would make a lasting impact.
Over the course of the program, nine sessions were held. During that time, the Community Kitchen Outreach residents, with the help of volunteers, prepared and served 340 meals. They spent 420 hours cooking, connecting, and building relationships with their neighbours. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—community members expressed how much the meals meant to them, with many saying it "made their day." The personal notes included with each meal added a special touch, further strengthening the bonds within the community.
The program didn’t just nourish the body; it nurtured the spirit of the neighbourhood. Through their efforts, the Community Kitchen Outreach residents fostered a sense of unity and belonging, leaving a lasting impact on the Chandler Mowat community
