Help Keep Kitchener’s Rinks Skating Strong This Winter

When winter settles over Kitchener, the city’s neighbourhood rinks come alive as spaces where neighbours connect, families play, and lifelong memories are made. These outdoor rinks are a cornerstone of the city’s winter recreation program, offering free access to skating and a chance to embrace the season in a uniquely Canadian way.

But the magic of these rinks doesn’t happen by accident. Behind every smooth sheet of ice is a team of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the rinks safe, functional, and welcoming. From shoveling snow and flooding the ice, to inspecting for cracks and hazards, their efforts ensure that skaters of all ages can enjoy a high-quality experience throughout the winter months.

Weather plays a major role in rink maintenance. It takes constant attention to keep it skate ready. Volunteers often spend hours layering water and clearing snow to maintain the perfect surface. It’s truly a labour of love!

These rinks are more than places to skate; they’re a reflection of our community’s spirit. Volunteers, many of whom are spurred by fond memories, bring passion and pride to their work. Their commitment helps kids today experience the same joy and freedom of skating outdoors they once did.

Want to help make winter magic happen? We’re looking for volunteer rink coordinators for several rinks as well as general volunteers to support sites across the city. If you love skating and the outdoors, please consider getting involved this winter!
