Playing together at Southdale Community Carnival
“One of the things I love to see is people sitting all around, in the shade, on the grass, in lawn chairs, just enjoying the event and taking in everything that's going on, ” Myrtle Mitton smiled remembering the Southdale Community Carnival, an annual neighbourhood event hosted by Immanuel Pentecostal Church.
“It’s all about developing stronger relationships between neighbours and creating a space where all feel welcome and like they belong.”
With rising costs, they decided to apply for a LoveMyHood Matching Grant for last summer’s event, making it more sustainable for future years and adding some new fun lawn games to the carnival, which were enjoyed by all ages! Jumbo Jenga may have broken height records, and (plastic) axe throwing was a hit.
Participants were given prize tickets that they could exchange for a wide variety of free treats and toys, thrilling the kids. A well-organized team of volunteers helped the event flow well, cooking burgers and serving a free meal to everyone who came, resetting the games, and dancing while supervising the bouncy castle line. Many hands made joyful work.
“It was really cool getting the LoveMyHood Grant, and so helpful,” Myrtle reflected. “Working with our Project Coordinator was the highlight of the entire process. Right from the beginning of the grant process, I felt like I had an advocate and champion.”
It is our privilege to work alongside residents like Myrtle, who give their time and effort to their communities with so much love. (It’s also a pleasure this time of year to daydream about summer events!)
