Rooted in Community: A Fresh New Look for Doon Pioneer Park Community Garden

At LoveMyHood, we believe strong neighbourhoods grow when people come together, help each other, and feel proud of the places they call home. And that’s why the Doon Pioneer Park Community Garden Revitalization Project received funding to add new garden amenities and bring a whole lot of joy to every gardener who steps through the gate.

Last month, the garden was ready to celebrate its big makeover. Garden coordinators Christy and Brian poured heart, creativity and community spirit into transforming this shared green space into a brighter, friendlier, and more joyful place.

The revitalization brought a fresh garden fence, new entry gates, accessible planters, and smooth pathways. These features make the garden easier and more enjoyable for their gardeners of all ages and abilities. As Christy puts it, the garden now “provides a pleasant gathering spot and enhances safety, accessibility, and mobility for our members.” With these improvements, gardeners, no matter their ability, can dig in, relax, and connect with fellow gardeners in a space designed for belonging.

One of the most exciting additions is the cedar compost system. Before, gardeners placed organic waste in the brush behind the garden. Now, with a real composting system, the garden can reduce waste, build healthy soil, and teach young gardeners how plants grow from start to finish. “Many children come with their caregivers,” Christy explains, “so this compost system will help them learn about plant care, waste management, and environmental stewardship.” It’s a small change with a big, longlasting impact.

The grant also supported planting new trees and installing a cistern, adding more shade, beauty, and sustainability. These upgrades have already encouraged gardeners to spend more time together, sharing gardening tips, enjoying peaceful moments, and hosting small community gatherings.

That sense of connection was in full bloom during last month’s Neighbourhood Garden Party. More than 30 neighbours came together to celebrate the revitalized space and welcome the 2026 gardening season. Guests enjoyed snacks, games, garden tours, and lively conversation, showcasing the pride and joy this project has brought to the community.

If you’d like to join the fun and become a member of the Doon Pioneer Park Community Garden, reach out to coordinators Christy and Brian at doonppcg@gmail.com to ask about available plots. Happy gardening, and happy growing!
