Rooted in community: the story of Veradis’ Garden
In Downtown Kitchener’s Civic Centre neighbourhood, something special has taken root: a community‑built sensory garden and woven willow sculpture created through shared learning, creativity, and healing. When neighbours Jessica and Andrew approached LoveMyHood with the idea of building a space that could bring people together after loss, they imagined a place where nature, art, and connection could flourish side by side. Over the past year, that vision has grown into Veradis’ Garden.
With the support of local artist Agnes Niewiadomski, residents learned the craft of willow weaving, gathering throughout the year to create the garden’s stunning basket‑weave walls and welcoming archway. These hands‑on workshops did more than teach a new skill, they helped neighbours form new relationships and strengthen existing ones, weaving community spirit into every curve and braid.
The garden itself was also community‑designed and built with guidance from local artist Michelle Purchase. Filled with native, pollinator‑friendly plants chosen for their colour, scent, and texture, the space invites visitors to slow down and engage all their senses. Whether it’s the soft rustle of hundreds of plants, the warmth of the willow structure, or the hum of bees among the blooms, Veradis’ Garden offers a grounding, restorative experience for anyone who enters.
Ongoing care will also stay in the hands of the neighbourhood. Residents sign up for a week of watering and weeding, sharing responsibility and nurturing the space they built together.
The garden is located on the corner of Queen Street and Otto Street, in the Civic Centre Neighbourhood.
Be sure to visit throughout the spring, summer and fall, when the plantings are bursting with blooms!
Veradis’ Garden is more than a beautiful addition to downtown, it’s a testament to what’s possible when neighbours come together with a shared goal. And its story can inspire others.
